Digging into culture from the inside out

When we do our Culture Design work, we’re taking an “outside-in” approach. We identify the broad culture patterns for the organization as a whole, and then use those insights to make targeted changes to processes or structures to better align the culture with success. But we’ve been looking for a way to help organizations with culture who need to start with just one team or department - to start from the inside out, with “people patterns” - to align teams internally, then use that culture alignment to figure out how to hire the right people.

So we were excited to discover the Predictive Index tool. It was new to us, though it’s been around for 50 years. It started as a simple but powerful paper-and-pencil behavioral assessment, and it has now been turned into a “talent optimization” platform that helps you quickly see the patterns in how people operate in the workplace.

It starts with a five-minute, online survey your employees can take to evaluate their behavioral preferences around areas like dominance, extraversion, patience, and formality. This is not a full-on personality assessment—it’s focused specifically on behaviors in the workplace. And just like our Workplace Genome culture assessment, you’re not evaluating how good or bad an individual’s patterns are—you’re simply identifying “what is.” Understanding the patterns will help you understand how individuals work best together and thereby make targeted changes that will create stronger teams and a more effective and successful organization. We work with clients to identify the people patterns within individual teams or departments, and use those insights to redesign jobs, improve team interactions, and make individuals more successful in what they do.
